About the Project

During the 2018 Viljandi Folk Music Festival in Viljandi, Estonia, Road Recordings set up a pop-up recording studio live recordings during the festival. The recordings represent authentic sound from the grounds, complete with ambient festival sounds and local sound marks such as the bells from Janni Kirik. These recordings are not about perfection, but rather, are about capturing the emotion during live performances. During the mixing process, minimal processing was used: light compression and some equalization. None of the recordings were overdubbed, and the natural ambience in each recording is a result of natural acoustic phenomena from the environment, the tent, and the flooring. Thank you to the musicians for making this project possible, and to the Viljandi Folk Music Festival and Viljandi Culture Academy for their support.
